Full Throttle Summer: The Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Returns

The roar of engines. The flash of sunlight on water. The heartbeat of the summer season.

Each August, the Lake of the Ozarks transforms into the ultimate stage for speed, adrenaline, and community spirit as thousands gather for one of the Midwest’s most iconic traditions: the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. This year, the 37th Annual Shootout—happening August 23–24, 2025—is set to deliver its biggest, boldest weekend yet.

A Tradition Unlike Any Other

Billed as the world’s largest unsanctioned powerboat race, the Shootout draws the fastest boats and bravest drivers from across the country—and an audience that now spans six continents thanks to live streaming. But here at the Lake, it’s more than a race. It’s part of the region’s DNA.

“It’s speed, spectacle, and heart—something you can only experience at the Lake of the Ozarks,” says one longtime volunteer.

First held in 1989, the event has grown from a grassroots gathering into a world-renowned celebration of horsepower and hospitality. And for 2025, it carries even more excitement: the return of the Lt. Governor’s Cup, a prestigious prize that hasn’t been awarded since the 1990s.

What’s Happening This Week

The Shootout is more than two race days—it’s a weeklong festival leading up to the main event. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Wednesday, Aug. 20Shootout on the Strip: Bagnell Dam Strip comes alive with boats on display, music, vendors, and family fun.
  • Thursday, Aug. 21Demo Day at Dog Days: Try out the latest in performance boating and get up close with manufacturers.
  • Friday, Aug. 22Poly Lift Poker Run by day, Live Auction Luau by night at Lazy Gators.
  • Saturday & Sunday, Aug. 23–24 – The Shootout Races from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Dog Days Bar & Grill, followed by the lively Rock the Dock Party.

From the water or on shore, the experience is pure Ozarks magic—boats flying down the Grand Glaize Arm at speeds topping 200 mph while fans cheer from docks, coves, and VIP decks.

More Than Just Speed

While the thunder of racing boats gets the spotlight, the true heartbeat of the Shootout is its charitable mission. Since its founding, the event has raised millions of dollars for local fire districts, first responders, and dozens of community organizations.

This year alone, 46 nonprofits—from youth robotics programs to Rotary clubs—will benefit. And every volunteer hour logged at the Shootout translates directly into dollars donated.

“It’s the perfect blend of fun and giving back,” notes an organizer. “When you volunteer here, you’re fueling the future of the Lake.”

  • Scenic Stage – The Lake itself becomes a racetrack, framed by bluffs, coves, and cheering crowds.
  • Community Impact – Every ticket, every sponsor, every volunteer helps strengthen Central Missouri.
