There will be fireworks in the air and inside the corral when the Lucas Oil Pro Bull Riding Invitational Presented by ProtecttheHarvest.com return to Lucas Oil Speedway this Friday and Saturday.
A field of 40 bull riders will compete for $10,000 in prize money in the Amped Up Pro Bull Tour two-day event. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with the show starting at 7:30 p.m. both nights.
Isaiah Dunn of the Amped Up Pro Bull Tour said there also will be five mini bull riders – nine and 10 year olds competing on mini bulls – along with a “funny man” entertainer, three bull fighters and plenty of giveaways including a drawing for a $6,000 gun from Outlaw Ordinance.
“The top rider Friday night also will be able to get on a bounty bull for a chance to win a $6,000 custom-made gun,” Dunn said. “Saturday night, at the end of the night, we’ll bring back the top eight bull riders from the weekend and they’ll get a chance to ride the best eight bulls.”
The overall champion will be determined from scores accumulated from both nights. Last year’s overall champion at Wheatland was Brady Sims of Holt, Missouri. Dunn said The Amped Up Tour is in the midst of a busy stretch of events. Hunter Ball and Zane Cook captured wins last weekend in Green Ridge, Missouri. Whether you’re a traditional fan of bull riding or a newcomer, Dunn said there’s plenty going on to keep spectators entertained both nights.
“They’re gonna see about two hours of action-packed, non-stop excitement,” Dunn said. “There’s nothing more exciting than watching a 180-pound cowboy – some a little smaller – try to get on an 1,800-pound animal and be able to stay on him for eight seconds.
“Between the bull riding and the bull fights we’ve added, it’s constant excitement. Pyrotechnics, flame throwers, bomb smoke, fireworks at the start of the show and after it each night, it’s exciting to see.”
Dunn emphasized that the bulls are well-bred, well-maintained athletes who are treated with the utmost care.
“These guys are on a strict-diet, with the best food and best healthcare,” he said of the bulls. “A vet is on sight to take care of any animal that needs care. It’s amazing how far bull riding as a sport has come and how well-treated the animals are.
“They are the second part of the show. It takes both the cowboys and the bulls to put on the show.”
Amped Up Tour leaders in the 2020-21 season standings, through events of June 10, are JR Stratford of Byers, Kansas; Colton Byram of Mound City, Kansas, and Skyler Sims of Peculiar, Missouri.

Off Road next door on Saturday: Next door on the Lucas Oil Speedway Off Road Track, the Kansas City Off Road Racing Association will make its first visit of the season on Saturday. Classes will include Youth UTV 170 Stock, 170 Modified and 570, Adult UTV Sportsman, Women, Pro Turbo, Pro NA, along with Mini Stock Truck, 1600 Buggy and Open Truck class.
Tentative Off Road schedule finds gate opening at 7 a.m. with practice at 10 a.m., qualifying at 11:30 a.m. and opening ceremonies followed by features starting at 3 p.m. Those purchasing Off Road tickets are admitted free to the bull riding on Saturday night.
